Aquarium Design & Construction

I started building my own aquariums as a kid. Glass, silicone, proper planning, patience and precision are really all it is. I naturally began focusing on reef aquariums, as they are the most complex and challenging, and I had developed a love for coral reefs at an early age. I set up large aquariums in my apartment during undergrad and essentially paid my way through school growing and selling live coral frags on the internet. I also worked for a high-end custom aquarium store, Reeflections Aquaria, in Boca Raton, Fl. I brought my advanced knowledge of corals to their team, and helped build and install several 1000+ gallon reef tanks in private homes and penthouses of South Florida.

As a coral reef research scientist, having a solid understanding of aquariums has proved extremely beneficial. During graduate school, I was commissioned to build the coral culture facilities at Mote Marine Laboratory's Center for Tropical Research, The Biscayne Nature Center, and Florida International University's Marine Sciences Laboratory. As a post-doctoral researcher, I designed, built, and installed an outdoor, 8000-gallon ocean acidification (OA) and temperature system. This state-of-the-art computer controlled system remains one of the most cutting-edge OA research aquarium systems in the world. I currently design and build the experimental aquarium systems for my research collaborators’ ongoing work at the Palau International Coral Reef Center each year.
