about me
I’m a coral reef research scientist by profession, an aquarist by passion, engineer by necessity, and a sailor and waterman by birthright. I live to build things. Functional things. And oftentimes, sometimes simultaneously, insanely beautiful things. Most of the things I build involve the ocean and coral reefs in some capacity, whether in a glass box, on the reef floor, or within a sample tube in my laboratory.
My PhD and post-doctoral research has focused broadly on understanding the effects of climate change on coral reefs; utilizing molecular and physiological techniques to decipher the complexity of corals and reef ecosystems. As a marine scientist, I’ve had the opportunity to conduct research expeditions all over the world. By virtue of this, I founded SUSiE, the Science under Sail Institute for Exploration, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. I built SUSiE around two of my biggest passions, sailing and research science, with a mission to advance a new generation of ocean scientists and explorers. It suffices to say, the expeditions I’ve led aboard SUSiE have been the most exciting and rewarding of my life. The students, partnerships, and projects I've been involved with have affirmed in me that together, with the right team, I have the potential to impact the world.
I live for bold and radical projects. As a scientist – I strive to ask important, but difficult questions; then design and execute experiments to find answers. As an expedition leader – I think the further off-grid the better. Building life-support systems – I regard engineered solutions to biological challenges as an artform. Designing custom reef aquaria - it’s not finished until we hear “WOW”. I'm always up for the challenges of building big, meaningful projects, and driven by the positive outcomes in their potential.
